Referral Process for the Yazoo County Gifted Program
1. Students may be referred for the GEP program by any interested party. (parent, teacher, student, self, or other) Neither grades nor achievement test scores
can eliminate a student from the eligibility process for the Intellectually Gifted Program.
2. The necessary screening is administered( the Raven for a 1st grader and the SAGES for a 2nd - 5th grader) to see if the student is a
candidate to continue the process.
3. Information is gathered about the student from the teacher on the referral form where 3 criteria must be met
4. The Local Survey Committee meets to determine the need to continue the process.
5. The Gifted Pupil Personal Data Sheet and Parental Rights forms are sent home.
6. The school psychometrist will administer an appropriate test to the student.
7. The Local Survey Committee meets to approve the eligibility determination of the child into the GEP.
8. An assessment report is written by the GEP teacher for all students tested whether they are ruled eligible or ineligible.
9. The parents are notified of the child’s testing being completed and the eligibility outcomes. They are invited to come for a conference to
view the psychometrist’s report and are informed about the aspects and curriculum of the gifted program.
10. After the initial conference time, parents wanting to access the gifted records of their child should contact the gifted contact person for an appointment.
Gifted Education Appeals Process
During annual reassessments students who are not participating in the gifted education program in a manner that is deemed acceptable may be removed from the program if approved by the district LSC.
Parents who are not in agreement with the school based committee decision to remove a student from the gifted program will present their concerns, orally or in writing, to the principal of the school. The principal and parent will attempt to resolve the issue informally.
If the parents are not satisfied with the action taken by the principal, the parents shall, within five (5) school days after meeting with the principal, put their concerns in writing and present them to Dr. Tom Taylor. Dr. Taylor will schedule a meeting of the Local Survey Committee within five (5) school days of a time frame agreed upon by the parents. Parents will be extended an invitation to attend the LSC meeting. The LSC will render a written decision based on the information shared during the meeting.
Final referral decisions regarding the GEP eligibility of a student will be made by a district Local Survey Committee (LSC). Parents who wish to appeal a referral decision should follow the steps listed in the second paragraph to appeal the decision.
.
Guidelines for Exiting the Program
Students wishing to exit the gifted program should bring a letter to the school GEP contact person from their parents verifying that their parents approve their withdrawal as well as sign the Refusal of Services form. The district LSC should be apprised of these withdrawal requests.
